| Looking
for a forever loving home...

by: Karen Twiss, Palm Bay Florida.
Chance
was brought to our local fire station Friday, May 13th by
2 young girls who found him wondering the streets in our
deserted southwest part of the city. I am a firefighter
with the city and was on duty at the time. Instantly, I
was smitten with his dark brown eyes and was soon lathered
with tons of kisses. Chance was severely dehydrated and
malnourished and his feet were blistered badly. His hind
legs and lower back were almost bald and he was full of
fleas. I gave him water and what little scraps I could
find around the station. Since we were on duty and could
not watch him , we called animal control to pick him up
and bring him to a safe place. A few days later I drove to
the shelter to check on him and was told no one has
claimed him yet. He had 2 days left and if no one came to
claim him he would be put to sleep. He was tested for
heartworms and came up positive.
The
day he was scheduled to be put to sleep, I waited at the
front door for them to open and I bailed him out. I wasn't
sure what I was going to do with him but I couldn't let
him get put to sleep because he was sick and abandoned.
I
took Chance to my vet the next day where he received a
physical and set a date to start his heartworm treatments. He
has had all his shots, bordatella, rabies
shot and has been on frontline for fleas. Chance
is also neutered. I was told he is approx. 3.5 years old.
He has successfully finished his heartworm treatment.
My
story..I have 2 rescue dogs and a cat of my own. I
have kept Chance in my spare bedroom since I brought him
home. He goes in and out every few hours by way
of leash ( does not like cats) for a while to play, eat
and
go to the bathroom. He returns to his room and I then take
out my 2 for the same routine, 4/5 times a day.
My
problem, I'm exhausted !! I have taken leave from my
job every shift 7-5 since I brought him home. It
has become
extremely draining on every aspect of my life, family and
career. I do not for one second regret spending all the
money I have or bringing him here and I know I would do it
again in a heartbeat but I need to find him a forever home
with a family he can enjoy, a yard to play free in and to
roam a house as it was his own. He is a great dog and will
make someone very happy.
Chances
story.. Chance is 3.5 ? years old. He is neutered with all
current shots/tags etc. He needs no medical attention but
to remain on Heartguard. He does NOT get along with other
dogs or cats and should be with adults or older
children. He will scale a chain link fence so he must
be in a privacy fence at least 6 ft. tall. He is severely
loyal and smart. He
is house trained and prefers to be
around someone most of the day. He has cuts and puncture
holes on his head, I'm assuming from dog fights or hog
hunting. He can be left alone inside, but craves
attention. He can sit, stay and lay down. His hair is
almost all grown back in except for where he was shaved
for his heartworm treatments. Chance is very strong, he likes to play
ball, go for car rides and take naps on
the couch. Yes, he is spoiled !!
I
have and am currently running an ad in Florida Today for
the past 2 weeks to find Chance a loving home but upon
visiting these potential owners, no one has come close to
provide what he needs. I have placed flyers at Wal-Mart,
Petsmarts , Firestations, gyms, local stores and restaurants
with no success. Florida Today actually ran a
story on Chance and I when a reporter heard of what I did
to try to help us find a home. Yes, I have tried to hook
him up with a rescue group here. They are either not
taking animals at this time or he will sit in a pen as he
did at the shelter. which is a kill shelter.)
I
will drive Chance anywhere and anytime for a foster or
forever home.
Sincerely,
Karen Twiss
